OLD BUSINESS

Much discussion centered on our recent presentation ceremony of $10,000 to the VA Dogs of Texas.  The ceremony was moving, with many wet eyes as we listened the success of the partnership between the veteran and dog.   We also learned about the process of finding a dog, a veteran and a trainer.  We also talked about the importance of spreading this information through a variety of methods to get more people (ACA chapters) involved in their own veteran projects.  Some of the ideas were:

Talk about the event with the national ACA board at the next national rally.

Submit an article and pictures to the ACA national magazine (perhaps buy a page to advertise it)

Submit an article and picture to the ACA national magazine through the president’s report.

Email the picture of the group and an accompanying article to all members and ask them to share with their local newspapers or media.

Display a slide show at the national rally.

Request any video or slide support that the VA Dogs of Texas might have (and share).

NEW BUSINESS

The rally at Catherine’s Landing in Hot Springs, AR on October 17-21st  was discussed.

The park requires advance funds to cover one night for all coaches attending.  The committee is trying to keep the cost per coach to $150.00 or less.  A motion was made by Robin Fagala, and seconded by Tony Todd to approve advance funding for $1,300 to cover advance financial requests.  The motion was approved by the membership unanimously.  The wagon masters of this rally were announced. . . and once again we owe a big thanks for their volunteering spirit and obvious dedication to our chapter.

BIG THANKS!

Lamar & Kitty Nicholson and Jerry & Greta Askins

Our upcoming officers election was also discussed.  We were informed by Myrna Haden that the by-laws of our organization require a thirty-day announcement prior to the election of the slate of candidates.  A nomination committee was created with Robin Fagala, chairman, Jerry Askins, and Dick Holmes.  They will present a slate of candidates and request that members who want to nominate someone (with their approval), or themselves submit names to any of the committee.

OLD BUSINESS:

A discussion was held among membership after a report from Jerry Askins (representing the committee of Jerry Askins, Carl Anderson, Benny Thome, Robin Fagala).  Jerry shared the results of their research of possible charitable organizations that support our veterans.  The group’s research focused on the amount of overhead; specifically the ratio of the charities administrative expense compared to the amount delivered directly to the veteran.  Robin Fagala has a spread sheet of a side-by-side comparison available to any member who would like to look at the details. The committee felt one charity would meet our goals and deliver the most “bang for the buck” and recommended VA Dogs of Texas.  This charity is located in Kerrville, Texas. and has a track record of developing companion / service dogs for veterans.  The dogs are “rescue” dogs and their health is monitored by a veterinarian before and during training.  A motion was submitted by Jerry Askins, that the South Central Chapter of the American Coach Association donate ten thousand dollars to the VA Dogs of Texas. Motion seconded by Robin Fagala.  President Allen Meek restated the motion and called for a vote of yeahs (for) or nays (against).  The motion was passed in favor, unanimously.  After the vote, members discussed how and when the check should be presented.  A member recommended we use the ACA newsletter to extend a challenge the other ACA chapters to match our donation.
